CAP Membership Requirements

Cadet Members

To meet the initial requirements for cadet membership in Civil Air Patrol, the prospective member must be:

  • Between the ages of 12 and 18.*
  • A citizen of the United States of America or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence to the United States of America.**
  • Enrolled in or graduated from a private, public, home school, or college program with a satisfactory record of academic achievement.
  • Of good moral character.
  • Not a member of the active duty Armed Forces.
  • Not married.
  • Not previously terminated from CAP for misconduct.

*Once enrolled, cadets may continue to serve until their 21st birthday.

Senior Members

To meet the initial requirements for senior membership in Civil Air Patrol, the prospective member must be:

  • At least 18 years of age, or be a member of the Armed Forces on active duty at any age.
  • A citizen of the United States of America or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence to the United States of America.**
  • Able to successfully pass FBI background check.
  • Not convicted of a felony nor discharged form military service on other than honorable conditions.
  • Not previously termianted from CAP for misconduct.

**Citizenship waivers are available under certain conditions.
